The Power of Materials: Honoring History through Tile
At ARTO, we believe that as a generational, handcrafted company, the materials we create carry deep meaning. Today, we are reflecting on the one-year anniversary of the Palisades Fire—a time to remember what was lost and celebrate the spirit of rebuilding.

Art as Healing: Our Collaboration with Carole Mayne
We are proud to highlight our collaboration with artist Carole Mayne, who is currently creating a new tile mural for the Lake Shrine. This project follows the fires that heavily impacted the surrounding community and serves as a symbol of how we can help: by supporting artists, honoring sacred spaces, and contributing to the healing process.
Carole is well-known for her stunning work with the Self-Realization Fellowship, including a glass mosaic she created for their church in Encinitas, CA. Because of that beautiful contribution, she was commissioned to create this new tile mosaic for the Pacific Palisades bathroom project.

Honoring the Heroes and the History
The story of the Lake Shrine’s survival is one of great bravery. During the fire, a father and son stayed behind to water down the buildings, saving most of the structures from destruction. While the community tragically lost the bathroom facilities and the monks lost their personal belongings, the preservation of the main buildings provides a foundation for the future.
Looking Forward
Art has a unique way of holding memory and honoring loss while simultaneously pointing us forward. Carole’s work on this new mural is still in process—the final subject hasn’t been finalized yet, but we are honored to be part of this journey.
Stay tuned as this project unfolds and the community continues to rebuild.
