Most ARTO tiles meet TCNA (Tile Council of North America) requirements for use in exterior or wet areas. All concrete tiles and pavers have been tested and meet the 0.42 value for dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) which is the most current and robust standard for slip resistance. Many other manufacturers still use the outdated standard for static coefficient of friction (ASTM C1028) which give a less accurate indication of slip resistance.
Our unglazed ceramic and high fired glazed tiles have all been tested and meet DCOF requirements for slip resistance (except for our Hazard County Orange and Apple Valley Red glazes. However, even these two glazes can be used in wet areas and commercial applications if we add grit (sand) to the glazed surface. A good example is the Mighty Kitchen restaurant in Los Alamitos shown below. The designers wanted to use Hazard County Orange in their multi color picket pattern so we added grit to increase the slip resistance.
Our low fired glazed ceramic tiles have not been tested for slip resistance but can be used for flooring in light duty residential applications. Keep in mind that smaller sizes will provide more slip resistance as they have more grout joints. The TCNA says these tiles can be used in potentially wet areas like bathroom floor and entryways as long as there are rugs or other ways to provide additional grip.
